Divine poets of the diaspora

“Divine Poets of the Diaspora examines the complexity of identity and womanhood throughout the African diaspora. This is made visual through a multi-media usage of photography, video, sound, and written poetry. The project is focused on feminine transcendence and the spiritual process of healing across the diaspora.”

Divine Poets of the Diaspora is a Virtual 3D Exhibition that highlights three Black women poets and their stories of identity, womanhood, & spirituality.

Sonia Sanchez, born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1934 is a poet and activist. She is one of the foremost leaders of The Black Arts Movement. The Black Arts Movement was an African-American-led Arts movement during the 1960s and 1970s that aimed to renew Black will, insight, energy, and awareness.

June Jordan (1936-2002) was a Jamaican-American poet and feminist. Jordan’s poetry engaged the fundamental struggles of her era: civil rights, women’s rights, and sexual freedom.

Warsan Shire is a Somali British writer who was born in 1988 in Nairobi, Kenya. She is most recognized for her creative contribution to Beyonce’s visual album, Lemonade, and the Disney film, Black is King. Her poetry evokes longing for home and is often nostalgic for memories of her parents, grandparents, and the people who forged her idea of her ancestral homeland through their own stories.

Programming for Divine Poets of the Diaspora will be during National Poetry Month in April 2023.
