Come join us for an exciting in-person event as The Free Black Women's Library HTX dives into the captivating world of "Purple Hibiscus"! We'll gather at the Anderson Center for Arts at 13334 Wallisville Rd, Houston, TX 77049, USA to discuss this powerful novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
Prepare to explore the themes of freedom, family, and identity as we delve into the story of Kambili, a young Nigerian girl finding her voice in a strict household. This thought-provoking novel will surely spark stimulating conversations among attendees.
Lorde-Morrison Day
Audre Lorde and Toni Morrison, two of the most prolific Black Women writers were born on February 18th; Morrison in 1931 and Lorde in 1934.
The Free Black Women's Library HTX in partnership with local author, Fallon Vaughn will host a special celebration honoring our ancestral literary mothers.
Bring a journal and pen for an intentional writing exercise.

Rooted In Abolition, In Love, In Imagination is a group show that brings together artist working in film, print media, and theatre. Each exploring the relationships, inherited practices and experiences that we need to create new possibilities.

Mother-Daughter Book Club
Butler’s most celebrated, critically acclaimed work tells the story of Dana, a young black woman who is suddenly and inexplicably transported from her home in 1970s California to the pre–Civil War South. As she time-travels between worlds, one in which she is a free woman and one where she is part of her complicated familial history on a southern plantation, she becomes frighteningly entangled in the lives of Rufus, a conflicted white slaveholder and one of Dana’s ancestors, and the many people who are enslaved by him.

Put on your “Sunday’s Best” and join the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston for a community festival celebrating The Obama Portraits Tour. The Free Black Women’s Library HTX will host a book discussion on Zadie Smith’s White Teeth. Former First Lady, Michelle Obama has said the White Teeth is one of her and daughter, Malia’s favorite books.

The Free Black Women’s Library HTX has partnered with creatives, Stacey Allen and Saida Carter to bring you “A Single Thread Weaves a Future.” Presented by Prauper Studios in collaboration with ArtHouston Magazine, The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, and Fresh Arts Org. Hosted in the 1800 sq ft gallery inside the historic Texaco building in Downtown Houston, “Houston Forever” is a must see!
